he Roman town Plotinoupolis, which is situated on the opposite side of the Castle of Didimotiho, was founded at the early 2nd century A.D. by Roman Emperor Trajanus to honour his wife Plotine.

lthough various findings that are connected with the existence and acme of Plotinoupolis started being discovered from very early (golden bust of Septimius Severus), the systematic excavating research began in 1977. Those excavations brought to light coins, buildings, mosaic floors (Leda with the Swan and the 12 feats of Hercules), objects made of clay, buildings of monumental and utilitarian character and parts of walls.
