esimvria or Zoni was founded by Greek colonists of Samothraki, in the 7th century B.C. on the southeastern coastline of Evros. It has been an important commercial center of the region and thrived during the 5th and 4th centuries B.C.

Mesimvria or Zoni is just one of the colonies that were founded at that time by Samothraki and are mentioned by Herodotus. The excavations which took place have brought a wall to the light, enforced with towers, roads, borders of residences as well as indications about the commercial center of the city.
wo temples have been discovered, one dedicated to Demeter and one to Apollo. Also, the graveyard of the settlement has been found, along with extremely rich findings (vessels, figurines, golden jewelry), indications of the high cultural level of the residents. Although the colony had an agrarian character at first, later on it evolved in a prosperous commercial colony.
